Misleading. I may be mistaken, but I believe you dont need to get experience for that item. You just get it.

You have to pay for the battle pass. When the free stuff pops up you dont need xp to unlock it. You just get it.

If you don’t purchase battle pass, you still have to gain Xp to get to the next tier. You can’t just select the free stuff, you have to wait until you have gained enough xp for the free item tier!
