Question ??? Why if I've bought elite should I have to also buy season pass just think its a bit of penny pinching

Because they're separate. The original COD Elite [Premium] is for MW3, while Season Pass is for BO2. However, if you bought Elite Premium, or Elite Founder you get some extras - like calling cards and emblems.
Elite is no longer "mandatory" to purchase, it's free to all users. All the features of Elite are now free, except for the Map Packs, which is the whole point of Season Pass.
